I don't see a good reason for it to happen. It's not a social networking site, is it? No. It's a public forum, for posting/forum discussions, and it's possible to contact other members through something other than public comments.

Bottom line:
If you install this new feature, more members are going to join just to be profile/comment whores, and never post on the forum. and what good is more members if all they do is spam up profiles with comments, instead of posting. Seems to me like it would hurt the site more than make it better.
