People are no nicer on the web than in real life, it is just ten times easier to lie and exaggerate behind the screen. I, personally believe it's perfectly possible to find someone nice on the web, but if you haven't met them in real life then I'm afraid you do not know them at all. As much as this may offend some people in online relationships you are essentially dating a stranger who you think you know, making it 10x more dangerous and making it 10x easier for them to screw you over. For these reasons I completely and utterly agree with your parents unless said person is capable of proving they aren't a rapist/stalker (such as on cam) and meeting up fairly soon so you can actually know them. Preeeetty sure Scribe will agree with me on this.

People can lie and "be anything" on the internet to lure someone in, etc. Could be some really bad person or someone only interested in you in a certain way (getting in your pants for a while kind of person who only uses others). There's a danger, yes, just like people in real life as well whom could easily lie as well, but it's usually more detectable in real life. As snow said, it's about making them prove what they are/aren't via cam.

Silky-Potato Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 The success rate of online relationships are more bad than good, I do know friends who have met their current girlfriend/boyfriend online that travel to see each other from america and england, and australia and scotland but I also know of friends who have been lied to horribly, or mistreated including myself. It is possible, and it can be nice, some people prefer getting to know others online because it can be easier, but like scribe and snow have said it comes with a lot of risks. These days people are getting better at pretending to be other people, even using fake video loops when on cam. There's nothing wrong with having online relationships, but IRL relationships are a lot better generally and tend to be healthier. Plus because it means you aren't just sitting down on the computer talking all the time.

The Lord Of Darkness Posted August 8, 2012 Posted August 8, 2012 my past 2 relationships have been with ppl ive met online. 1 lasted 17months and the other lasted 3 years. i have a rule though. before i meet up with them we had to talk on the phone quite often (gets rid of the awkwardness and stuff when eveentually meet up) so im all for it but if you dont talk over the phone then thats a no no to meet up lol
